June 22:  Chop and Drop: Fisheries Habitat Enhancement Training:  7:45am-12:30pm Millar Arena, Houlton.  Large wood in freshwater streams provide habitat features that are vital to the survival of native brook trout and other cold water fish species. Adding large wood to stream channels using the "chop and drop" method in conjunction with a timber harvest can create pools, provide cover for juvenile fish and enhance overall stream function.

This training is an opportunity for licensed foresters and fisheries biologists to meet the requirements of MFS Rule Chapter 25: Standards for Placing Wood into Stream Channels to Enhance Cold Water Fisheries. This rule seeks to streamline the permitting process for landowners who wish to undertake voluntary wood addition projects in cooperation with state fisheries resource agencies.  MFS, IF&W and Field Geology Services will cover topics on stream geomorphology, forest stream ecology, timber harvesting techniques, forestry regulations, and more. Training consists of an inside portion and outside field sites in Houlton and Hammond. Credits include 4 Category 1 SAF; 1/2 day CLP recertification; and 4 QLP. Workshop is free but pre-registration is required by calling 254-4126 or emailingThis email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
